Mission Statement
- To position ourselves, across a range of measures of research performance, in the top decile of UK universities;
- To achieve and sustain a reputation for teaching excellence and innovation that ensures a buoyant student intake in both quality and quantity;
- To develop and sustain a corporate image which reflects the quality of the research, teaching, facilities and environment of the College;
- To support the above through efficient, cost-effective, administrative structures.
Strategic Aims
The Mission of the College will be achieved by meeting a series of aims which express broad ambitions:
- to promote and sustain a culture and environment for high quality research and teaching that attracts and retains staff and students of the highest calibre;
- to invest in new academic appointments and to conduct appropriate restructuring exercises which will ensure that the highest possible percentage of academic staff employed are research-active and judged by their peers to be of high national or international standing;
- to promote a culture and infrastructure which maximises earned income in support of high-quality research and teaching;
- to exploit activities which provide a third stream of funding and promote interaction with business and the community;
- to achieve a balanced financial budget which enables investment in appropriate and affordable capital developments;
- to set and achieve performance targets with the help of a more systematic planning system which integrates budgeting devolved to academic and service units with effective financial management;
- to support the above with a comprehensive information strategy and high-quality management information systems;
- to devolve to academic units greater flexibility in developing and implementing unit plans and infrastructures in support of the overall College mission, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary initiatives;
- to exploit partnerships and develop strategic alliances, particularly with other HE institutions and the NHS;
- to develop links within the local region and enhance links with the local community;
- to promote educational and staff development that not only equips staff to meet their current needs but also prepares them for future changes;
- to provide a safe physical estate which includes attractive student residences and associated facilities;
- to widen access to new groups of students through partnerships and the use of new technologies such as distance learning, whilst maintaining the quality of teaching and learning;
- to provide a range of high quality academic courses and research study areas which are relevant to the twenty-first century;
- to have effective external relations which promote the image and profile of the College.
